I absolutely love this season of giving. And while my husband and I don't lavish our children with gifts on Christmas Day, I understand the desire to do so. After all, I feel that as parents we are to exemplify God's love for his children to our own children - encouraging them to open their minds and heart to His even-greater love. So in that respect, it makes perfect sense to lavish children with presents - since we too are lavished by God's grace and mercy and blessings and the gift of His only son.
But I also know that we are called to make responsible decisions with money - and that the debtor is slave to the lender. For that reason, I become angry and frustrated when I hear advertisements offering lay-away and payment plans and no money down and 0% interest - potentially taking advantage of parent's good intentions and the desire to see their children's happy faces at Christmas.
